Aerosol‐Jet‐Printed Encapsulation of Organic Photovoltaics

Organic electronic devices (OEDs) are prone to oxygen‐ and water‐induced degradation therefore need be encapsulated with barrier materials. In this work, an aerosol jet (AJ)‐printing process is developed coat perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) directly onto OEDs by adapting the print setup systematically optimizing parameters. Furthermore, a novel curing that converts PHPS silica layers combining damp heat (DH) exposure subsequent vacuum–UV irradiation. This two‐step treatment shown considerably faster gentler than state‐of‐the‐art processes also yields quantitatively higher conversion. Both printing conversion fully compatible OED devices, which demonstrated damage‐free direct encapsulation of organic solar cells. The cells show significant reduction in DH conditions (65 °C/85% r.h.), maintaining >95% their initial performance for >100 h. Complementary electroluminescence measurements reveal AJ‐printed effectively prevent lateral water ingress into devices. Herein, proof principle provided AJ can used thus industrially highly relevant technology precisely encapsulate such even on 3D objects.
